Canton, Texas – February 25, 2008Legacy Dental Group, in observation of National Children’s Dental Health Month, embarked on a special program to educate young elementary school children about oral hygiene. As well as inviting classes to tour their office, dentists from the practice traveled to various schools in Van Zandt county to teach children about brushing and flossing their teeth. Dr. Ben Bratcher, who also serves as the president of the Canton ISD School Board, explained, “Educating children about caring for their teeth is not just a good idea, it’s a responsibility we have to our community. That’s why Dr. Gerard Macy and Dr. Glenn Stern and some of our best hygienists have personally gone to area schools and taught a few hundred Pre-K, Kindergarteners, and First Graders proper techniques of brushing and flossing.”

By involving the children in the presentation, presenters keep their attention and leave the students with a good taste in their mouth about dentists and oral care. One of the presenters, Dr. Gerard Macy explains, “One of the kids’ favorite parts of our presentation, is when we get two students to come up in front of everyone and put on some big white t-shirts. Stuffed animals represent trapped food. Then we ask another couple of students to move a rope back and forth to dislodge the food. They learn the how and the why of flossing at the same time.”

Each February, the American Dental Association sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.
